Parent Resource Page

If you are the parent of an enrolled or future UNM Lobo, we have compiled some information especially for you. While your child is worried about getting into college, you're probably more concerned about paying for it. UNM is here to help. Our goal is to make a college education affordable for all students regardless of their families' financial situation.  UNM offers a number of financial resources (grants, scholarships, loans and employment opportunities) to assist students and families in meeting educational expenses.

How we will contact your student

  • Students will receive primary contact through their UNM email. With the exception of first-time freshmen receiving emails at the email address listed on the admission application.
  • All students who have been accepted to UNM and completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should use Loboweb Financial Aid Tab to view their Financial Aid Status. Students will need a UNM NetID and password to access Loboweb.

Gaining Access to your Student’s file

  • Do to FERPA regulations, we cannot speak to parents about their student’s Financial Aid file or any other student status (admission, grades, bills, etc) unless the student gives express consent. Students are made aware of this at New Student Orientation (NSO), the steps to give express consent to a certain individual is also relayed to students at NSO.  Parents can only have access to their student’s file if the student completes the FERPA Release form and releases all or certain aspects of their student file. If no FERPA release is on file with UNM we are required by law to not divulge any information for matriculated students.
  • Parents can be granted access to the Bursar Account Suite to make payments and view bills, this access is separate from the FERPA release form. A student must add their parent as an authorized user of their Bursar Account Suite, click here  for instructions on how to add an authorized user.

Completing the FAFSA

  • The FAFSA becomes available Oct 1 (beginning with the 2017/2018 FAFSA). UNM’s FAFSA Priority Date is January 6, with and Additional Documentation Date of Jan 31.
  • Below are some guides to help you navigate applying for Financial Aid. Remember, as a parent you are required to complete the parent portion of the FAFSA and sign the application with your own FSA ID and password.  Without your information and signature, the FAFSA will be deemed incomplete. The FAFSA becomes available Oct 1 (beginning with the 2017/2018 FAFSA). UNM’s FAFSA Priority Date is January 6, with and Additional Documentation Date of Jan 31.
  • Read our Parent FAQ’s  for more information regarding parent borrowing, accessing your student’s file and billing information.
Cost of Attendance and Financial Aid Net Price Calculator
  • Cost of Attendance (COA): COA is the estimated cost of attending UNM. It includes items such as Tuition & Fees, Room & Board (both on and off campus), Books, Transportation, and a miscellaneous category. It is not your bill or what you owe to the University. To see what your student owes to the University they will need to consult their UNM Bursar Account Suite.
  • Prospective UNM Students and Parents: Use our Financial Aid Net Price Calculator to determine what your estimated Cost of Attendance will be and an estimated guess on what Financial Aid you may be able to receive to help cover those costs.
  • Current or Admitted Students: If you are currently admitted and have completed a FAFSA use Loboweb to view your Financial Aid information including your actual Cost of Attendance. Learn how the COA is used to determine your “Financial Need” and how COA can affect your awards.
